National Accounts

The National Accounts Unit compiles a quarterly set of consistent, reliable and comparable macroeconomic accounts intended to meet the needs of government and private-sector analysts, policy makers and decision takers. The system is based on the European System of Accounts (ESA 95), which was adopted in the form of a Council Regulation to give it a solid legal basis across the EU Member States.

GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is the most frequently used indicator in the National Accounts.

Public Finance

The Public Finance Unit compiles quarterly sector accounts for the General Government. The unit also measures the debt and deficit levels of the sector bi-annually.

In order to measure R&D activity undertaken by the General Government sector, all the components of the sector are surveyed through an annual questionnaire.

Balance of Payments

The Balance of Payments Unit is responsible for the compilation and publication of a quarterly and annual Balance of Payments statement as well as an annual International Investment Position statement of Malta.

The statistics are compiled in accordance with the international guidelines and regulations set by the International Monetary Fund, the European Statistical Agency - Eurostat as well as the European Central Bank.
