Library

The NSO Library includes over 10,000 items in its collection. Most of the collection is based on statistical publications and products emanating from international organisations, national statistical institutes and local organisations. The library also includes an extensive collection of Eurostat (the statistical agency of the European Union) publications.

The collection comprises statistical publications in various formats. These include monographs, serials, journals and CD-ROMs. Although most of the collection is made up of items that are normally classified as reference material, a large part of the collection is available for circulation. The collection includes several issues of rare 'Blue Books' dating from the late nineteenth century, which are the earliest publications of general statistics for Malta. Besides other statistical material from several countries, the library also houses UN, UNESCO, OECD and IMF documentation together with a number of texts and readers on economics, statistics, public finance and related disciplines. A very important and growing part of the library collection deals with methodologies related to the main NSO fields of operation and interest.

The composition of the library collection ensures a coherent and sustainable development of the material available for  library users.

The users of the NSO library include the NSO staff, members of the public service, the media, researchers/students, the Business Sector and the public in general. The library forms part of the services offered by the External Cooperation and Communication Unit. The services include customised requests, selective dissemination of information (SDI) to staff, current awareness services, publishing and dissemination of NSO products, subscription services and a Data Shop selling NSO products.

Requests for statistical information are managed centrally by the Unit. In this regard, it acts as an interface between the public and the user. A telephone service (25997219) is also available for statistical users wishing to find out more about the availability of statistical data.

The NSO places great emphasis on having qualified and trained staff in this unit. In fact three persons currently working in the library are qualified librarians with a Diploma in Library and Information Studies from the University of Malta.

The Library at the NSO is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00 in winter and from 08:00 to 13:00 in summer. On 24th and 31st December the Library closes at 12:45.
