Background
On 4 September 2008, the United Nations Statistics Division requested countries, regional an international agencies to send their views on the proposal of observing a World Statistics Day on 20-10-2010. The outcome of this consultation was an overwhelming support for this initiative, with around 70 countries and international agencies voicing their support.
The Day is intended to raise awareness on various levels: in countries, regions and around the world.
Objectives
As ultimate goals, the Day would:
-
acknowledge the service provided by the global statistical system at national and international levels;
-
help strengthen the awareness and trust of the public in official statistics;
-
serve as an advocacy tool to further support the work of statisticians across different cultures and domains
Activities
At the national level, different countries are planning to mark World Statistics Day by means of various activities. Some countries are organising conferences, while others are planning to publish papers or books.
On a suprantional level Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, will be issuing a joint press release with contributions from the national statistical institutes of the EU Member States.
International, regional and sub-regional organisation should help and support countries and regions to make a success of their activities.
The Logo
A Logo has been designed to reflect and communicate the aims and objectives of this event. The Day purports to celebrate the many contributions of official statistics by focusing on three sub-themes:
-
service to nations and the world;
-
the professionalism of statisticians;
-
and the integrity of statistics.
The World Statistics Day logo will be used in posters, calendars, banners, e-banners, and letterheads. More information may be accessed on a dedicated website at http://unstats.un.org/unsd/wsd/
