This publication records 60 years of the history of Malta's statistical institute, from its inception to the marking of the 10th anniversary of the Malta Statistical Authority and the NSO.
The Central Office of Statistics was set up in 1947. In the following decades, the Office experienced institutional changes but, by the 1980s, had assumed the structure of a national statistical agency with the production of statistics as its sole remit. From the 1990s onwards, the Office played an important role in Malta's EU accession process. The turn of the century brought into being the Malta Statistics Authority and the National Statistics Office, on 1 March 2001.
